Working with Photographers

Coordinating a photographer with your story idea or event can be key to receiving coverage in the media. Good pictures help tell the story and interest the readers.

Hire a photographer if you can. If not, recruit a volunteer, or learn how to take decent pictures yourself.

Writing the editorial

Writing editorials and opinion columns requires several skills at once – the ability to write succinctly, maybe even entertainingly, tightly structured, and in the voice of your client. This leads us to perhaps the most important skill after basic writing skills, being a careful and intuitive listener.

Sometimes a Small Thing

Sometimes a small thing can trigger a story idea. Mrs. Pearl, 93 years old at the time, sent a $20 cash donation to Reading & Radio Resource with a hand-written note saying that the radio reading service was the first thing she heard in the morning and the last thing at night.

Her note [...]

Working with Columnists

Don’t forget that columnists or short highlight sections are often the most read in a publication. They usually include a photo, too.

I Do Sports, Too.

I do sports, too.  As a girl, I lived in West Texas where football is King, so football is ingrained in my soul.  I still have my Rankin Red Devils memorabilia.

The Arts and Art Galleries - Where to Publicize?

Fashion magazines, design magazines, neighborhood papers, even business papers can spotlight your cultural event or art gallery. I’m always on the hunt for new publications or websites.  PaperCity Dallas, Modern Luxury Dallas, the Fort Worth Star-Telegram, The Dallas Morning News – Guide, and the Dallas Business Journal are featured here.

Beautiful Images

Beautiful images are everything when working with artists and art galleries. A professional photographer knows how to shoot artwork to look its best. Lighting and a professional “eye” can mean the difference between a photo that enhances the artwork and a photo that is “just a photo.”  The sculpture of Michael O’Keefe, photographed [...]

Strategic Messaging

Before you can talk about or sell your business or organization, it helps to have determined just what you are.  There are lots of business terms for this, but my favorite tools are strategic messaging and the SWOT analysis (Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, and Threats.) I worked with Marsha Cameron and Billie Day of [...]

Market specific media

Sometimes a story is of interest to both general media and a more specific market media.   A media plan needs to reach both potential audiences. When Nobel Peace Prize Winner Archbishop Tutu visited The Episcopal Church of the Transfiguration from his home in South Africa, predominantly African-American papers were invited to all [...]

Three Birds with One Stone

Dallas/Fort Worth House & Home asked if I could submit tips for buying art.   One of my tips was to consider buying art that speaks directly to you.   As an example I used a painting by one of the artists represented by client Norwood Flynn Gallery, Ray-Mel Cornelius.

So, I promoted Miller [...]

Feature Writing

Feature writing offers a chance to more fully explore an issue and to tell a compelling a story. It’s also a chance to bore the reader after the first page if attention is not paid to story arc.

The CliffDweller Magazine article on the Rosemont Elementary School’s arts program was a work of [...]

Interviewing and Article Writing

Newsletters can help cement team spirit within a company, an organization, or among its constituents, but only if the newsletter communicates news people want to read. People want to read interesting stories about other people. Interviewing and writing these stories is time-consuming and often gets shunted aside for more generic content. [...]

How is this lawyer different than the 3,000 other lawyers in the field

How to differentiate your client from others that do the same thing? Walter Hofheinz is an estate planning lawyer, one of several hundred in the Dallas area, and thousands in Texas. As the 2006 recipient of the State Bar of Texas Lawyer of the Year, general practice, solo and small firm section, [...]

What's Your Story Today

Creativity and persistence can make a big difference in whether your story is told in the media or not. In Dallas, The Episcopal Church of the Transfiguration is only one of thousands of churches. Churches all do basically the same thing, so it’s hard to generate media interest about a particular church unless [...]

Market Everything

First impressions – make them count. This media kit was designed to highlight the Italian connections for the University of Dallas as it launched a major capital campaign.
