Día de los Muertos Celebración – during the 2020 Pandemic

Entry Arch by Ricardo Alarcon

The sixth annual Día de los Muertos Celebración, presented by the Hughes Family Tribute Center, went forward this year, in spite of the global Covid-19 pandemic.  As an event planner, caution, careful planning, and an understanding of our particular audiences. This year dance and musical performances were limited to strolling throughout the cemetery only, no stage performances, and the parade was cancelled. The historic Art Deco mausoleum which usually houses the community ofrenda was closed because of its close quarters, and no delicious tacos from Tacos Doña Mary were served.

However, families still gathered at the cemetery to honor and remember their loved ones. Tharpo the Clown entertained the children, Mariachi Michoacan serenaded individual families, and Ricardo Alarcon, ceremonial Mayan dancer with Grupo Pakal blessed the families.

Plans are already underway for 2021 when we will be able to grow bigger and better with more offerings to the community.
